Passing of David Thomas

On Behalf of the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association:

We are saddened by the passing of our beloved friend and a fellow ECU Pirate, “Coach” Dave Thomas. He was a friend, mentor, leader, and advisor to many Superintendents, Principals, Athletic Directors, Coaches, and Student-Athletes in North Carolina.  His smile lit up the room and his jokes sometimes made us laugh until we cried.  He always knew everyone’s name and made each of us feel special with his comments or hand-written notes.

I will always think of “Coach” when I hear this song “The Boys of Fall” by Kenny Chesney.

You were a teacher, a preacher
A mother, a father
A lot less taker than giver
A keeper of secrets
And constantly making
Believers outta quitters
For all of your time
And your heart and your soul
You deserve a lot more than a toast
But here’s to you, and thanks again
We’ll never forget you COACH!

For all of your time
And your heart and your soul
You deserve a lot more than a toast
But here’s to you, and thanks again
We’ll love you and we’ll hold you in
Our hearts there with
The things that matter most
We’ll never forget you COACH

Oh God bless you, COACH
We’ll never forget you COACH

Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to Pat Thomas, his entire family and his many friends around North Carolina.

Rest in Peace, my friend.
