Week 1: Leader vs. Manager – Which One Are You?
We’ve all heard the phrase “Be a leader, not just a manager,” but the truth is, both roles are essential — especially in our world. We manage buses, schedules, budgets, and facilities. But we also lead people, culture, vision, and relationships. The key is knowing which hat you’re wearing — and when to swap it.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Managers keep the train on the tracks. They organize, plan, and execute. They handle logistics, follow timelines, and keep systems running.
- Leaders are looking beyond the next station. They cast vision, inspire others, develop people, and influence culture.
In athletics, you don’t get to pick one over the other — but if we’re not intentional, the daily grind can drag us into manager-mode and leave our leadership muscles underdeveloped.
Something to Reflect On:
- When’s the last time you intentionally led your coaching staff or your student-athletes — not just managed them?
- Are you spending more time reacting or intentionally shaping culture?
